Marriage as a Living Picture - Marriage Message #3

Do you realize that a Christian marriage is a testimony — a living picture of Christ’s love for His church?

“God wrapped His words around the relationship of marriage to describe God’s love and relationship with the world.” (Charlie Shedd)

As believers in Christ, we’re God’s representatives — His Love “with skin on,” demonstrating through our marriages that God, Who is Love, can take two self-centered individuals and help us to love beyond ourselves to the glory of God.

We all need to realize that when we hurt each other, we’re hurting the testimony of Christ. When we dishonor one another we dishonor the testimony of Christ. When we act unloving and “un-Christ-like” to each other we’re hurting the living picture of Christ that God wants to display through us. After all, how will the world view the transforming love of Christ if we aren’t showing the love and grace of Christ toward one another in our marriages?

We should ask ourselves, “Does the love of God shine through in the manner in which we interact with our spouse? The Bible tells us in the book of 2 Corinthians chapter 3 that as followers of Christ we’re each a “letter, written on hearts, known and read by everybody.”

We’re “to show” that we’re “a letter from Christ”…”written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.”

For further reflection read the following Bible verses: Proverbs 5:21; Romans 12:9-10; 1 Corinthians 10:31; 2 Corinthians 3:3; Ephesians 5:1 and 25; and 1 John 3:11- 5:12. Ask the Lord to speak truth to you as you study His Word.

Our prayer for you (and for us) this week is that we’ll show unconditional love to our spouse in such a way that the world “will know that we are Christians by our Love” and that God will be glorified in how we live our lives.

May God’s richest blessing be upon you and upon your marriage as you live for Him.
