In honor of the Easter celebration this week, we are going to depart from our series on conflict resolution, to focus on a different type of communication — communicating through prayer. Someone once said, “The shortest distance between a problem and a solution is the distance between your knees and the floor. The one who kneels to the Lord can stand up to anything.” How true we’ve found those words to be in our own lives and others as well!
We receive an abundance of letters here at Marriage Missions asking for us to pray for marriage situations. And we also receive letters in which the person writing is asking why God hasn’t answered their prayers. To this we have to say, we honestly don’t know. From the outside looking in, we can sometimes guess, but we aren’t certain. Those are questions we will someday ask God when we are with Him in Heaven. He is God and we are not, and there are some things that our human minds will never understand this side of Heaven.
But in keeping with Resurrection Sunday, we came across something that Anne Graham Lotz wrote in her book “God’s Story … Finding Meaning for Your Life in Genesis” (printed by Word Publishing), which we would like to share with you. It concerns this topic of prayer and how God is active in ways we don’t and may never realize from our earthly perspective. She wrote:
“Although God was actively involved throughout the Creation process, in the beginning the ‘earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep’ (Genesis 1:2).‘the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters’ (Genesis 1:2). He was personally, invisibly, actively preparing Planet Earth to receive His Word and be transformed into a place of beauty and purpose, a place that would reflect His image and bring Him pleasure.
“Whom are you praying for whose life is ‘formless’ — with no apparent purpose or meaning? Whom do you know whose life is ‘empty’ — void of satisfaction and fulfillment? Is there someone you love who lives in the ‘darkness’ of depression or ignorance or confusion? Are you concerned for a friend (or spouse) whose life is like the ’surface of the deep’ — undulating, unstable, always changing, and moody?
“Even though you have prayed without ceasing, have you seen no evidence of God’s activity in that person’s life? Have you therefore concluded that God is NOT active? Or that He has not HEARD your prayers? Or that if He has heard you He just doesn’t CARE? Or if He cares that He simply is UNABLE to do anything about it?
“Place your faith in the God of Creation! He cannot be less than Himself. And He is ACTIVE whether or not you and I can see evidence of His activity. In answer to your prayer of faith, the invisible, silent Spirit of God will move and hover over the heart and mind and will of your loved one, preparing him or her to receive His Word and thus be transformed.
“The Word the Spirit uses in your loved one’s life may be a verse or passage of Scripture that you share with him or her or something heard on radio or TV or in church. God is active, but He does not always act according to our time table. He is very patient. But don’t mistake His patience for inactivity; understand that very often His activity is unseen.
“You and I must place our faith in the God of Creation Who is active in big ways, small ways, and unseen ways. Sometimes God tests and strengthens our faith by withholding evidence of His activity from us so that our faith is in Him alone. The men and women of God in the Old Testament were commended for faith that ‘is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.’
“Following the resurrection of Jesus Christ but before His ascension, He spent forty days and nights, coming and going among His disciples. At one point, two of His disciples were walking along the road to Emmaus when suddenly Jesus appeared, walking with them. Then, just as suddenly when they broke bread together, He disappeared.
“At another time that same day, His disciples were gathered together in the Upper Room in Jerusalem with the windows barred and the doors locked. Suddenly Jesus was in their midst; then just as suddenly He disappeared. Jesus appeared again suddenly to His disciples on the shore of Galilee after they had been out all night fishing.
“During the forty days when Jesus suddenly appeared to His disciples then just as suddenly disappeared, could it be He was teaching His disciples to live by faith? Whether or not they could see Him, He seemed to be teaching them to be confident He was actively present and involved in their lives.
“His involvement is always at His own initiative.”
If you and I had been present at the time to view the earth, we would have been able to see no outward, visible evidence of God’s activity at all. In fact, we might have had the impression that because we could not see any evidence of His activity, He was not doing anything. Yet at that very time, you and I will not always understand why God doesn’t answer prayer as we thought, or in the timing we thought He should.
But the Bible tells us that, “His ways are not our ways.” And for that reason — because He is God and we are not, we are to trust our Creator that He is “working all things together for our good” because we love Him, and He loves us, and we fit in with His plans. We are to trust Him through our stretching experiences that there is a higher purpose for our times of waiting. And as His followers, we are to trust Him for the suffering we endure. The Bible tells us in 1 Peter 4:13, “Rejoice, inasmuch as you are partakers in Christ’s sufferings.”
It’s not that we have to be gleeful, but instead grateful that there is a purpose for everything that God allows to happen to us. As Oswald Chambers wrote,
“If you are going to be used by God, He will take you through a multitude of experiences that are not meant for you at all, they are meant to make you useful in His hands, and to enable you to understand what transpires in other souls so that you will never be surprised at what you come across.”
That is just a small glimpse into a reason God may be allowing certain things to happen.
We could continue for months on this subject, and I wish we could. But we pray that some of the insights discussed will help you to trust more and question less, if that is God’s will for you, and keep persevering even though you don’t see evidence today of your prayers being answered.
“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:4-7).
Jesus Christ is risen indeed! Halleluiah!

The following comment was sent to us, concerning this Marriage Message:
Amen! What an encouraging message!! Funny, it is everything that The Lord has been speaking to me in bits and pieces and when He did, I said AMEN (at that time, especially the words of 1 Peter 4!!!), but when the reality hit home, my faith waned! How pathetic our hearts are…. How so very badly we need God each time and each moment…….!! Please thank God with me that I am now able to wake up at night to pray coz this is what I need to continue doing.
(SOUTH AFRICA) Praise God. The timing of this message is simply impeccable. It comes at a time I’ve been seeing cracks in my faith – that what I’ve been praying for is perhaps not in line with what God wants for me. This is inspite of my belief that God is a God of relationships and that marriage (where I’ve been experiencing problems for sometime) in particular is sacred to Him. My faith has been renewed.
The following comment was sent to us concerning this week’s Marriage Message:
The message today has expressed exactly what I have been through. The Lord has worked a miracle in my marriage and restored it. And your messages helped me to change so many things in my life and also to be patient, have faith and wait for the Lord’s work.
It was quite a painful experience for me coz it involved unfaithfulness, but because of your messages I waited, and prayed with faith in my heart though there was no outward visible sign that the Lord was working on my marriage. When the answer came, it was so sudden and unexpected it left me amazed and awed at God’s way of doing things. May His name be praised. I am joyous and I have committed everything in my family to him coz I have learned to trust him. Thanks and may he bless you! too.
(FIJI) Praise God!! it is like God is speaking to me directly through your messages. It is so amazing and I am truly blessed for God’s guidance in my life through this site. Whenever I am looking for an answer it is right here!!!!
I was also beginning to get disheartened of why God is allowing such unwanted circumstances in my life and why are they not going away… I had faith but I still wondered why God is not answering… Well, now I will not ask this question anymore coz I have learned of how God’s plan works for my life.
Thanks for encouraging me through this site and thank God for showing me that he is in Control although i do not see any evidence i am now confident that God’s hand is at work in my life and that my prayers will be answered according to his will n the right time.
May God bless you and may you bless others just like you blessed me today!! Love, RD
