So…”What’s a feed?” you ask.
Well, simply put, it’s a new way to receive material from your favorite website(s).
How so?
Well, let’s say you have 5 favorite websites you visit all the time. You could visit all five every time you’re in front of the computer. Or you could use a feed reader and view the latest content from all five at once without going to any websites.
Most desktop feed readers resemble email clients like Outlook in which they list out all the channels to which you’ve subscribed on the left (like mail folders), giving a one line summary on the right. If you click on the summary then it will open it just like an email and you can read the article (below or to the right of the summary or in a separate window).
Or you can choose an online service like Google Reader or My Yahoo! if you’re used to web mail setups.
Most modern web browsers (like Firefox, Internet Explorer and Safari) have at least some basic feed-reading capabilities.
It’s a time-saving way to see if anything new or interesting has popped up on your favorite site.
Any time you notice the
icon (or an “RSS” icon) in the top portion of your browser, it means you can subscribe to that site’s feed service(s). Give it a try!
